Yomiko
From the humble beginnings of a pencil sketch to a commissioned series for Hutchison 3.
Yomiko revolves around two friends, Yom and Iko, two intrepid explorers in a megatropolis gone wild. Set in a not so different world to our own, Yomiko follows the adventures of the two explorers and their motley crew of friends.
Beginning as a personal project with no client, no brief and no restrictions on time or resources, Yomiko span several years and led to multiple successes both personally and professionally. These are just a few of the screens and characters from the series.
Having developed into a successful website, the characters ventured into various territories for inspiration including Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Jaws. Along with a staple of modern favourites Yomiko moved into a world that pulled on topical news stories and events.
As with any personal project, you get to a place where you wonder, 'why the f*** am I doing this?' Yomiko was such a project but also an adventure, a learning curve and the development of a brand that surpassed digital. With a range of t-shirts and self sticking sticky stickers, the brand moved to a point where it started to get noticed.
With Hutchison 3 launching its mobile network in Australia, they approached me and asked for an animated series to be developed exclusively for its comedy channel on its mobile network. As Yomiko was being considered for a show in Japan, the was only one things for it, create a new series with a wealth of new characters entitled 'Live from the Metropolis'.
